Spring Rate

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

“Spring Rate” is one of the most important terms to understand in the spring manufacturing industry, for spring manufacturers as well as spring buyers. The spring rate is the amount of force produced when a spring moves one inch. As a compression spring moves, the amount of active wire decreases in the spring thus producing higher spring load. In a very over-stressed spring, and on rare occasions, the load can decrease as the spring compresses. This only happens if an active coil bends outside the diameter of the spring, increasing the spring outside diameter, thus reducing the load as the spring is compressed, again-this is a very rare occurrence with compression springs.

Well-designed springs will not perform abnormally. Katy Spring can assist with spring design to ensure your spring will operate to it’s maximum potential.
