In the young fourteen year history of Katy Spring, the primary types of springs that have been manufactured are custom compression springs.  Compression springs are the most popular style of spring in the spring industry.  Sometimes referred to as compression coil springs, custom compression springs sizes can range from wire diameter compression spring sizes, the size of a human hair to the size of a human thumb or specifically .005 – .625 for cold wound compression springs.  The first extension compression spring manufactured at Katy Spring was made from .012 302 type stainless steel spring tempered wire.  The spring was used in a mechanical seal for the oil field industry.  The term “extension compression” is not common with spring manufacturers.  It refers to the spring for the mechanical seal, because it is extended to clamp around the seal.  Industrial rubber was then used to mold the spring to the seal.  As the rubber penetrated the coil spaces and cooled, the spring then acted as a compression spring securing the rubber around the spring coils.  After the spring was extended and then compressed to support the rubber mold, it can be classified as a wire form to support the mechanical seal, because it no longer deflects.

Compression springs come in different sizes and shapes.   At Katy Spring, we are here to assist your compression spring order process.

  • .004 Inches to .625 Inches in Wire Diameter

Compression springs should be stress relieved to remove residual forming stresses produced by the coiling operation. Depending on design and space limitations, compression springs may be categorized according to stress level . Please view the categories below.

There are compression springs which can be compressed solid without permanent set, so that an extra operation for removing set is not needed. These springs are designed with torsional stress levels when compressed solid and they do not exceed about 40 percent of the minimum tensile strength of the material.

Another type of compression spring are those which can be compressed solid without further permanent set after set has initially been removed. These may be pre-set by the spring manufacturer as an added operation. These are springs designed with torsional stress levels when compressed solid that usually do not exceed 60 percent of the minimum tensile strength of the material.

Lastly there are springs which cannot be compressed solid without some further permanent set taking place because set cannot be completely removed in advance. These springs involve torsional stress levels which exceed 60 percent of the minimum, tensile strength of the material.

Torsion Spring

Two springs are considered difficult to manufacture in the spring manufacturing industry are flat torsion springs and double-body torsion springs.  Flat torsion springs are made out of flat or rectangular-shaped sprint tempered wire.  A double-body torsion spring if a left-hand wound and a right-hand wound torsion spring connected by the same wire.  Double-body torsion springs are a single unit spring.  Throughout the years Katy Spring has manufactured more double-body torsion springs simply because there is a higher demand.  In the early days of Katy Spring, double-body torsion springs were made on a spring lathe where the spring wire was wrapped around an arbor manually leaving a straight, connecting piece in the middle to be hand formed later.

In modern day Katy Spring, double-body torsion spring are manufactured on CNC spring manufacturing equipment that requires longer set up times, but run faster and more accurate parts which can hold tighter tolerances.

Flat torsion springs require specialized tooling and torsion attachments for mechanical spring manufacturing equipment.  Katy Spring doesn’t make a lot of flat torsion springs, because the requirements and demand are low.  Flat torsion springs, like flat-wire compression springs put a lot of load in a small space.  Katy Spring has on rare occasions wound flat torsion springs on a spring lather but only for very low volume requirement

Die springs are are generally less expensive than rectangular-wire springs because they are mass produced and don’t require custom tooling that rectangular-wire springs require.  Heavy duty die springs are not solely used in dies.  Other applications include automotive clutches, brakes, farm machinery and aircraft equipment. Heavy duty die springs or heavy duty compression springs have many high stress and heavy load applications.
