Compression Springs

Manufacturing vs. Traceability in Spring Manufacturing

Compression springs are used in many types of industries including automotive, aerospace, oilfield, and other industries where mechanical devices are manufactured. Many people have the perception that automotive and aerospace industries require high-tech springs, for example, ones that call for grinding a compression spring with extreme precision. This isn’t always true. Industries requiring high-quality standards can sometimes apply to all types of springs, for example, double body torsion springs and flat springs, but many times it applies to the paperwork. The paper trail in the automotive, aerospace, medical, and high-tech component industries require everything to match; heat lot numbers, part numbers, purchase order numbers, and any outside processing or packaging specifications. Sometimes creating the perfect paper trail for an aircraft round or flat spring can be just as difficult and time-consuming as manufacturing the part.

That’s not to say other industries do not have high-quality standards.  Everyone needs their springs to be manufactured correctly.  We in the spring manufacturing industry often find that compression springs, double body torsion springs, round springs, extension springs, torsion springs, and wire forms that have tolerances or requirements specified on the print are unnecessary and drive the cost of the spring higher than it needs to be. We understand industry requirements, especially that automotive, aircraft, military, and medical industries require their suppliers to adhere to their particular standards. Consult with your spring manufacturer about the specific tolerances and requirements of your spring and its application.  One may find savings and fewer headaches in purchasing springs.
